Heat Pump Plus tariff: Cheaper electricity for smarter home heating

Heat Pump Plus Tariff | Save on Heat Pump heating with OVO

Posted:

Heat Pump Plus is our innovative plan that works alongside your heat pump to optimise how and when your home uses electricity, helping you reduce your carbon footprint and cut energy costs.

It’s not a heat pump itself, It’s a free add-on that you can get with any of our tariffs. If you're eligible, you can run your heat pump at 15p per kWh with Heat Pump Plus. So you'll pay one rate for the electricity your home uses, and a lower rate for the electricity your heat pump uses. Saving you an average of £4651 a year.

Who’s eligible for Heat Pump Plus

To benefit from Heat Pump Plus, our smart electricity add-on for cheaper, greener heating, you’ll need to meet a few simple eligibility requirements. Designed for homes already using low-carbon heating, this tariff helps you save money by giving your heat pump a lower electricity rate. Here's what you’ll need:

  • Be an OVO Energy customer (or switch via a quick online quote).

  • Have a compatible heat pump:

    • Vaillant aroTHERM 3 or aroTHERM Plus (2016 or newer)

    • Viessmann Vitocal 150-A or 151-A air source heat pumps

    • Or a heat pump installed through OVO’s partner, Heat Geek.

  • Have a smart meter that can send half-hourly readings - Don’t have one? OVO installs it at no extra cost.

We credit your account in the first 7 working days of each month. It’ll also appear on your monthly OVO bill under Heat Pump Plus Credit.

Please note that the benefit is capped at 6,000 kWh a year. Check our T&Cs to see the eligibility criteria in full.

How does Heat Pump Plus work?

With Heat Pump Plus, you'll pay the lower rate of 15p per kWh for the electricity your heat pump uses. And your standard electricity rate for the rest of your home.

First, we'll charge all of your electricity use at the rate in your energy plan. Then, once we know how much electricity was used by the heat pump, we'll credit back the difference the next month.

Heat pumps use ambient air to heat your home and are far more efficient than traditional gas boilers.3 But they still draw electricity from the grid and the carbon intensity of that electricity can vary hour by hour.

If you're already investing in clean tech like a heat pump, Heat Pump Plus is the natural next step.

How much can I save with Heat Pump Plus?

Switching to a heat pump can already save you money on your heating bills—but with OVO’s Heat Pump Plus add-on, you could save even more. By powering your heat pump at a reduced rate of just 15p per kWh, Heat Pump Plus helps you run your heating system more efficiently and affordably.

For eligible customers, this can mean saving up to £467 a year on heating costs when compared to running a G-rated gas boiler at standard efficiency. These savings come on top of the long-term benefits of switching to a heat pump, such as reduced maintenance costs and lower carbon emissions.

Important Information

  1. Savings will vary depending on your heat pump usage, efficiency rating, the cost per kWh of your standard home energy tariff, geographical location and weather. Actual sum is £467.54. Savings of £465 are based on the following comparison: a G-rated gas boiler running at 70% efficiency with an average annual consumption of 10,436 kWh at 6.98p per kWh used for heating and hot water, versus an air source heat pump installed through OVO with a Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (or efficiency rating) of 4.2 and an annual consumption of 1739 kWh at 15p/kWh with the Heat Pump Plus add-on.
