Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) tariff explained

If your solar panels make more electricity than you use, a Smart Export Guarantee tariff, or SEG tariff, lets you get paid for sending that extra energy back to the grid.

In this guide, we’ll explain how SEG works, who’s eligible, what OVO’s SEG rates are, and how to choose the right tariff for your home. We’ll also cover what you’ll need before applying, including certification, a smart meter and export readings.

What is a SEG tariff?

A SEG tariff is the rate an energy supplier pays you for renewable electricity you export to the grid. For most homes, this means spare electricity generated by solar panels that you do not use straight away.

Different suppliers set different SEG rates and terms, so the right option depends on your system, your supplier, and whether you have solar panels, battery storage, or both.

How does the Smart Export Guarantee work?

When your renewable energy system generates more electricity than your home needs, the extra energy can be exported to the grid. Your SEG supplier then pays you for each kilowatt hour, or kWh, you export.

Your SEG supplier does not have to be the same company that supplies your energy. GOV.UK explains that suppliers can set their own SEG tariff terms, so it’s worth checking the rate, eligibility rules and payment terms before applying.

What are OVO’s SEG tariff rates?

Here’s a simple breakdown of OVO’s current SEG tariff options. Rates and eligibility can change, so always check the latest tariff details before applying.

Which OVO SEG tariff might be right for you?

· If you already have solar panels and your electricity is with another supplier, the Standard SEG tariff applies to you.

· If OVO supplies your electricity, check whether you could qualify for SEG Beyond Exclusive.

· If you’re planning a new solar and battery installation with OVO, compare SEG Install Exclusive because it may offer the highest OVO export rate.

What do you need before applying for a SEG tariff?

Before you apply, you’ll usually need:

· A renewable electricity system, such as solar panels.

· A smart meter that sends half-hourly export readings.

· Proof that your installation and installer are MCS-certified or certified through an equivalent scheme.

· Your installation documents, including evidence of DNO approval.

· Confirmation that you’re not already receiving Feed-in Tariff export payments.

How much could you earn from SEG?

How much you could earn depends on how much electricity your system exports and which SEG tariff you qualify for. A home that exports more electricity, or qualifies for a higher export rate, will earn more from SEG payments.

Your earnings will also depend on how much electricity you use at home. If you have battery storage, you may be able to store more of your solar energy to use later, but the right setup depends on your home, your usage and your tariff.

How to apply for a SEG tariff with OVO

Once you know which SEG tariff is right for you, you can apply online. You’ll need to share details about your renewable energy system, your certification, your meter and any documents needed to support your application.

SEG tariff FAQs

What is the best SEG tariff?

The best SEG tariff depends on your solar setup, your supplier, and whether you also have battery storage. A higher export rate can be useful, but it is not the only thing to compare. Check whether you need to be an energy customer, whether your system was installed by a specific provider, how often payments are made, and whether the tariff is fixed or variable before applying.

Do I need to be an OVO customer to get a SEG tariff?

Not always. OVO’s standard SEG tariff is available if your electricity is supplied by any provider, as long as you meet the eligibility criteria.

Can I get a better SEG rate with a battery?

You may be able to access different export rates if you have solar panels and battery storage, depending on who installed them and which tariff you qualify for. A battery can also change how you use your solar energy at home, because you may be able to store more of the electricity you generate and use it later.

Do I need a smart meter for SEG?

Yes, need a meter that can provide half-hourly export readings. This is typically a smart meter, because your SEG payments are based on how much electricity you export to the grid.

Can I switch SEG supplier?

Yes. Your SEG tariff supplier does not have to be the same company that supplies your energy, so you can compare your options and switch if another tariff is better for your setup. Before switching, check your current tariff terms, payment schedule and any application requirements for the new supplier. You should also make sure your export readings and documents are ready.

Can I get SEG if I’m already on the Feed-in Tariff?

You cannot receive a SEG tariff if you’re already getting Feed-in Tariff export payments. If you moved into a home with solar panels, check whether the previous owner was receiving Feed-in Tariff payments and whether those payments were transferred. It’s worth confirming your current export payment setup before applying for SEG, so you don’t apply for a tariff you can’t use.
